Amblyopia

The journey of the eye patch...
As most of you know, Jack has been wearing glasses since May 2009. He has been diagnosed with strabismus and amblyopia.

Strabismus is a vision problem in which both eyes do not look at the same point at the same time. Strabismus most often begins in early childhood. It is sometimes called crossed-eyes, walleye, or squint.
Amblyopia, also called lazy eye, occurs in children when one eye does not develop proper vision. Among other things, it can be caused by nearsightedness or strabismus. The most common treatment for lazy eye is wearing an eye patch to strengthen the weaker eye.

At our last eye appointment we found out that one eye is doing really good and has gained some strenght but the other eye has not. So, now Mr. Jack must wear an eye patch on the "good eye" so that the bad eye is forced to work and get stronger!

Initially Jack was devastated at having to wear a patch. He thoguht that poeple were going to make fun of him. It broke my heart to see him cry and be concerned about things like this! We tried to play up the whole "pirate" thing but he wasnt having it. He was scared to wear it to daycare becuase of the other kids. So, the first day he just brought it with him and eventually allowed Kathy (babysitter) to talk to the other kids about it. Then, kathy, being the WONDERFUL person that she is decided to let all of the kids make eye patches! So, at table time they all made little pirate patches! From that point on the kids thought Jack's eye patch was cool and it has been smooth sailing with the patch!

Im so proud of him for wearing it so good. I am hoping that we will get this corected before he starts school.

I think he is super cute with his little eye patch on! :)
